The Medical Research Council has announced that applicant-led funding opportunities will reopen on 7 April 2026, marking a significant shift after a period of pause in its curiosity-driven research programme. According to UK Research and Innovation, experimental medicine opportunities will follow on 30 April 2026, while other schemes are scheduled to open later in the year.

What will reopen in April
The reopening includes applicant-led research, new investigator and partnership grants, with no closing date listed. UKRI also said the NHS patient flow dementia challenge will open on 24 April 2026, followed by experimental medicine stage one and stage two on 30 April 2026.
Additional schemes are due to follow in May and July, including the MRC CoRE round four full application and the return of translation and commercialisation schemes under updated names. UKRI said the Developmental Pathway Funding Scheme will be renamed MRC Proof of Concept, while the MRC Gap Fund will become MRC Impact Acceleration Awards.
