The NHS will roll out seven-minute cholesterol checks at around 100 high-street pharmacies in England this autumn, in a move the health service says is designed to speed up prevention and help reduce heart disease and stroke deaths over the next decade. The programme is aimed at people aged 40 to 84 who are not pregnant and who have not had a blood test in the past year.
How the new pharmacy checks will work
According to NHS England, the quick appointments will allow eligible patients to have cholesterol measured locally rather than waiting for a routine GP appointment or hospital test. The service is being introduced as part of a wider prevention push, with the NHS linking earlier detection of raised cholesterol to lower future risk of cardiovascular disease.
The announcement follows a busy summer for the health service, which has also been dealing with high demand across urgent and planned care. NHS England said A&E saw record attendance in July, while ambulance activity and 999 call volumes remained elevated.
Part of a broader prevention drive
The pharmacy rollout comes after a series of recent NHS prevention measures, including the expansion of cervical cancer self-testing and renewed calls for people eligible for flu vaccination to come forward ahead of winter.
