By contrast, short-term changes in macronutrient energy distribution and micronutrient intake did not show robust associations after false discovery rate correction.

Meal timing mattered too

Meal timing appeared to influence sleep duration and autonomic tone. Heavier evening meals, defined by the percentage of total daily energy consumed in the six hours before bedtime, were associated with longer total sleep time but also with a higher mean nocturnal heart rate.

When the analyses focused on more extreme dietary contrasts, the direction of the effects remained the same and the magnitude of the associations increased, according to the study.

The authors said the results indicate that routine daily dietary choices, particularly plant-forward composition and meal timing, have immediate and measurable effects on objective sleep architecture.
