A new cohort study published on Nature has found that dietary patterns during pregnancy were associated with maternal characteristics and selected neonatal outcomes, adding fresh evidence to the debate over how everyday food choices may shape early-life health.
The research, which analyzed data from 1,404 pregnant women in the LIFE Child cohort in Germany, identified four distinct eating patterns: mixed-diet, traditional bread-based, high-ultra-processed foods, and vegetable-rich. The investigators used a Food Frequency Questionnaire and hierarchical clustering to group foods, then examined how those patterns related to pre-pregnancy body mass index, socioeconomic status, gestational weight gain, and birth outcomes.
Ultra-processed foods tied to higher maternal BMI and weight gain
Women in the high-ultra-processed foods pattern had the highest pre-pregnancy BMI and the greatest gestational weight gain, while those in the vegetable-rich pattern had the lowest pre-pregnancy BMI. The study also found that maternal characteristics differed across the four clusters, suggesting that diet quality during pregnancy often tracks alongside broader social and health factors.
According to the authors, infants born to mothers in the vegetable-rich group had a significantly higher gestational age at birth and greater birth length compared with selected other dietary patterns. By contrast, mothers following the high-ultra-processed foods pattern had the lowest proportion of infants born appropriate for gestational age, although that difference was not statistically significant.
