NHS Launches Early Flu Vaccination Push for Children and Pregnant Women

September 2, 2026 NHS Launches Early Flu Vaccination Push for Children and Pregnant Women

The NHS has begun its 2026 flu vaccination programme for children and pregnant women, rolling out jabs from 1 September as part of an earlier-than-usual winter preparation drive. The health service said the move is designed to protect families ahead of the colder months, when flu can spread quickly and put pressure on hospitals.

Millions eligible as the winter programme starts

According to NHS England, millions of children and pregnant women can get their flu vaccinations from today. The first phase of the programme includes school-aged children, two- and three-year-olds, children in clinical risk groups and pregnant women, with vaccines being offered through schools, GP practices, pharmacies and mobile vans. NHS England’s announcement says the programme is intended to make access as easy as possible.

The NHS said children are offered the vaccine from September because flu often spreads rapidly among younger age groups. Pregnant women can receive the flu jab at any stage of pregnancy and are also able to get the RSV vaccine, as well as the whooping cough vaccine, to help protect their newborn babies in the first weeks of life.

Why health leaders say the rollout matters

NHS England said flu is more than a bad cold and can lead to serious illness, including hospital care for children. Pregnant women are also at greater risk of becoming seriously ill. In the statement, Dr Amanda Doyle, National Director for Primary Care and Community Services, said flu can be severe for some children and pregnant women and that vaccination helps reduce the risk of hospitalisation.

Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Yvette Cooper said vaccinations play a vital role in protecting those most at risk and are important for easing pressure on the NHS over winter. She added that everyone eligible for a free vaccination will be notified by phone or post.

Part of a wider winter preparation strategy

The earlier start comes as the NHS continues to prepare for the seasonal rise in respiratory illness. The rollout is also tied to the national flu vaccination programme, which NHS England says should begin on 1 September for children, pregnant women and some adults, or as soon as vaccine supply is available.

For families, the message from the NHS is straightforward: take up the offer early to build protection before flu begins to circulate widely. The service says more information about eligibility and booking is available through official NHS channels.
