A new cohort study published on September 2, 2026, has found that pregnant women who followed a vegetable-rich dietary pattern had the lowest pre-pregnancy BMI and were more likely to deliver babies with a higher gestational age and greater birth length than women in other diet groups. The study examined how these patterns related to maternal characteristics such as BMI, socioeconomic status and age, as well as infant outcomes including gestational age, birth weight and birth length.
According to the study, women in the high-ultra-processed foods group had the highest pre-pregnancy BMI and the highest gestational weight gain. In contrast, women in the vegetable-rich group had the lowest pre-pregnancy BMI and the highest socioeconomic status among the four clusters. The traditional bread-based group showed the highest parity.
Newborn outcomes differed across diet groups
Infants born to mothers in the vegetable-rich group had the highest mean gestational age and the greatest birth length. Birth weight did not differ significantly between the groups, and some estimated differences in the proportion of babies born small or large for gestational age did not reach statistical significance. Still, the authors said the overall pattern supports the idea that prenatal nutrition remains an important window for intervention and guidance.
The study also noted that women in the high-ultra-processed foods group were younger and had lower socioeconomic status than those in the other clusters. While the results do not prove causation, the authors concluded that maternal dietary patterns during pregnancy were associated with both maternal characteristics and selected neonatal outcomes.
