COVID-19 Reactivation Study Highlights Hidden Viral Risks in Long COVID

A severe bout of COVID-19 may do more than damage the lungs and trigger prolonged recovery. A new study published in Nature suggests the illness can also wake dormant viruses inside the body, with reactivation of anelloviruses appearing linked to especially intense infections and the later development of long COVID.

Large hospital cohort points to viral reactivation

The research analysed more than 1,000 people hospitalized with COVID-19 and found evidence that a serious infection can reactivate pathogens that had previously been quiet in the body. The study focused in particular on anelloviruses, which are usually considered harmless but may become active again after severe illness.
