Oxford University has begun recruiting UK volunteers for a phase 1 trial of a potential vaccine designed to protect against the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, in a rapid response to the ongoing outbreak in central Africa.
The candidate jab, called ChAdOx1 BDBV, was developed in just eight weeks by scientists at Oxford and uses the same platform behind the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine. According to The BMJ, it is the first of four candidate vaccines against the Bundibugyo strain to enter clinical trials.
Why the trial matters now
The trial has received conditional regulatory approval from the UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, and researchers plan to assess both safety and immune response in 50 healthy adults aged 18 to 55. Vaccinations are expected to begin in the coming weeks after full regulatory approval, although production has already started.
Bundibugyo Ebola has drawn renewed attention because the strain has fewer established countermeasures than the better-known Zaire ebolavirus. The urgency of the trial reflects the need to move candidate vaccines into human testing quickly when outbreaks are active and options remain limited.
A fast-tracked scientific response
The speed of development underscores how quickly platform technologies can be adapted when researchers already have a proven vaccine backbone to build on. In this case, Oxford scientists used a familiar approach and moved from design to readiness for testing in a matter of weeks, a timeline that would once have been unusual in vaccine research.
