Researchers in Zurich say a new multiple sclerosis treatment designed to retrain the immune system rather than suppress it broadly has cleared an important early clinical hurdle, with the first patient data suggesting the approach is safe and well tolerated.
A different strategy for an autoimmune disease
The experimental therapy uses the body’s own red blood cells, to which selected protein components are attached. The aim is to redirect the mistaken immune response seen in multiple sclerosis toward a tolerance-producing pathway, instead of dampening immunity across the board.
According to the researchers, the approach is intended to help the immune system stop attacking the brain and spinal cord, which is what drives the disease. Current approved treatments can be effective, but they also suppress the immune system in a non-specific way and may cause significant side effects.
Early trial results point to safety and tolerability
The first clinical trial results, published by the University of Zurich team and collaborators, indicate that the therapy was safe and well tolerated in the initial patients studied. The researchers also reported promising signs that the mechanism they designed is working as intended.
Lead author Andreas Lutterotti said the concept could allow the disease to be treated in a much more targeted manner, while last author Roland Martin said the work had cleared the first clinical hurdle after more than two decades of development. The team is now looking ahead to a forthcoming trial that will assess clinical efficacy once funding is secured.
Why the approach matters beyond multiple sclerosis
The researchers said the same principle could potentially be applied to more than 100 autoimmune diseases. If larger studies confirm the early findings, the method could offer a new path for treating conditions in which the immune system attacks the body’s own tissues without weakening overall immune defenses.
For now, the results remain an early step, but they add to growing interest in precision immunology approaches that aim to restore immune tolerance rather than rely on broad suppression.
