The UK Medical Research Council has opened a fresh funding round aimed at supporting research that could improve diagnosis, treatment and prevention across human health, with the latest opportunities published in late July and early August 2026.
Among the newest calls is a plan to establish a UK Obesity Research Institute, described as a programme to support world-leading research into the mechanistic biomedical drivers of obesity and to develop targeted interventions to prevent and treat obesity and its health consequences. New funding priorities focus on prevention and treatment
The MRC’s current portfolio also includes a call for purchase of mid-range equipment for biomedical research, with an opening date of 13 August 2026. Another open opportunity, titled “Expression of interest: Precision prevention: biological mechanisms of response variation”, was published on 21 July 2026 and opened the same day. UKRI says it is designed to study why people respond differently to biomedical prevention interventions and to generate mechanistic evidence in humans for precision prevention through better targeting.
